What’s your favorite fast food place? McDonalds, Sukiya, Yoshinoya, Burger King, KFC, Sushiro? There are many to choose from, but only a few compared to the US.
There are hundreds, maybe even thousands of chain fast food restaurants spread across the US. So let me tell you about a few of the big, but probably less known outside of the US.
Some of the fast food places are not nationwide so even Americans in other parts of the US haven’t tried them. The biggest example of this that I know is In ‘n Out.
This is a west coast burger chain and the farthest east it goes is Texas. This family owned chain was founded in California. One of their biggest draws is the simple menu.
There are only four food items on the menu in their stores. These include french fries, a hamburger, cheese burger, and the double double. Most of those are easy to understand, but a double double is basically a cheese burger with a second beef patty and slice of cheese.
Their patties are all beef and the french fries are cut from the potatoes and fried with every order. Drinks are also simple as they offer fountain soda drinks, with free refills, and milkshakes made with real ice cream. The shakes come in three flavors: vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry.
Now this limited menu wouldn’t fit everyone’s taste would it? Surprisingly most people really do like how simple it is and as the name says, you can get in then out quickly because there isn’t much hassle when choosing what you’d like to eat.
But, that’s not all there is to this quick little fast food chain. They have a ‘secret’ or not so ‘secret’ menu that you can order from if you know how to order. These not so secret menu items are a fun little addition to their menu and offer slight changes.
Things like a 3×3 (three by three) or 4×4 (four by four) or asking for either your fries or burger animal style. The 3×3 is just a step up from the double double so you’ll be getting three meat patties and the 4×4 is the same. Animal style comes with grilled diced onions instead of sliced raw onions.
Another favorite of many people on a diet is the protein burger which comes with lettuce as the buns and no bread. I’ve never tried it myself, but I’ve been told it’s good.
My usual order is a double double animal style, french fries, and a neapolitan milkshake (all three flavors of milkshake in one). I believe it’s the best combo, but everyone has their preference.
In’n’Out is a staple fast food place in California specifically, but there are branches in other parts of the US. So, if you go to California it is a place you need to try. Almost any local will recommend it if you ask about fast food burgers.
There is debate about who has the best fast food burger, but the top runners always include In’n’Out. Lastly, so that you can make your visit a success, unlike other fast food places in the US they aren’t open 24 hours.
Mcdonald’s, Burger King, Jack in the box, and many others will run their drive through 24 hours so you can get food at any time. But, In’n’Out is 10:30 – 1:00/1:30am. Make sure to be ready to wait if you go during meal times, 11:00-1:00, 5:00-7:00 or after 12:00am.
They do get very busy so there might not be a place to sit inside. Many people opt to eat in their cars. You usually get a nice little box for it if you go through the drive through.
I don’t want to promote eating fast food every day if you go to the US, but they are the fast food capital of the world, and it’s a major part of American culture.
You should definitely try a few. But, keep in mind that if you ask the locals, especially in California they are not going to recommend Mcdonald’s for a burger.
There are way too many better options for fast food in general and burgers specifically for you to spend time going to Mcdonald’s.
With that in mind, on your next visit to California, make sure to visit a few fast food joints in between all your sightseeing and exploring. The flavors are great and it’s one of the cheapest ways to enjoy the classic american hamburger.
