Intro

Traveling to different countries can be a really exciting and eye opening experience. But, how do you know if you’re seeing the best of the place you’re at and not just the tourist fun spots.

If that’s what you want, that’s great! Just going out into a new place is a wonderful experience, but sometimes there can be more to see and do if you know where to look.

Only locals know

When most people travel they will look into and do a bit of research on where to go, what to eat, and the most popular spots in their destination. The thing is, most of the time, those recommendations are not written by the people who know the place best, the locals.

Plus, how do you know if you can trust it? When I travel, my go to places to look for things is usually TripAdvisor. This is mostly because it is usually the first thing to come up in a search list on google. This usually works well enough, but the best trips I’ve ever had were when I went with a local.

Road trip

For example, I’ve been to Italy twice and I hope to go many more times.  The first trip was with two friends, one of which was Italian. When an opportunity came up to visit Italy we decided to make a road trip of it.

Here’s where things got awesome for us visitors. Our friend picked us up from the airport and we had a place to stay for the night, their house, before our actual vacation began.

We told them the major place we wanted to see and this amazing friend/tour guide filled in all the extra time with equally exciting or interesting places to see. They even knew the best route so we could see more than if we had planned it without them.  We weren’t even moving at a fast pace.

While on the trip we went to four different cities and in two of those we didn’t have to pay for somewhere to stay because our Italian friend knew someone there. This made the trip even more flexible because we had more money to spend having fun.

Trip to Bologna

The second time I went to Italy I went with another friend of mine and we made plans together.  We went to three cities and met some people I knew who lived in Italy. We planned quite a few sites to see, but we still had a lot of down time and run out of things to do. We did get lucky a few times, such as seeing my first opera ever, in Venice. But, in my opinion the best part of the trip aside from meeting my friend and our lucky finds was when we were in Bologna.

As a quick extra, if you ever go to Italy visit Bologna. It’s got some of the best food I’ve ever eaten. In Bologna we had an amazing AirB&B host. When we checked in he gave us a quick rundown on the city.

I’d been there before, but he made sure to mention a few extra local spots. He asked us what our main goal was, and it being Bologna, we said we were there for the food.  He loved that and quickly gave us a list of some of the smaller more traditional restaurants in the city a bit away from the tourist zones.

Making your travel plan

He even recommended a nice wine bar where we could have an aperitif for cheap with a selection of wines, local and not so local that would make any wine lover happy.  We were so happy with his recommendations after the first one that we made sure to check all of the others as well.

Both trips would have been amazing without any of the extra things I got to enjoy, but why settle?  When you’re going on a trip for fun don’t you want to make the most of it? Don’t you want to have the best of the best? See the most interesting places? Eat the most delicious food? I know I do.

Plus, think about how you would treat a visitor to your hometown or country. I for one would only want them to see the best places and enjoy themselves as much as they can.

The locals want you to enjoy yourself and be happy that you visited their town so you can tell stories about it to your friends and family back home. This has been my experience every time I’ve asked someone from the area for a suggestion.

Conclusion

Now, I’m not saying to leave everything to the locals/friends/airbnb hosts that you ask, because you should always have some idea of what’s around, what the place is famous for, what you can see.  Just keep in mind, There’s always more to see and experience when you’re traveling. There’s always going to be something you miss, no matter how much you plan.  So go out there and meet some people, and I’ll say it again, enjoy your trip as much as you can for as long as you can.
