Intro

Are you a free spirit? Someone who likes to take things as they come and hates following the same trends and formal social norms? Do you have an artsy side you want to show off? Well then, this is the style for you.

If you are like a person that could be described by the questions I just asked you probably already have a style that makes you comfortable. But, I’m sure there are a lot of people who are looking for a fun and light way to express themselves more freely.
If that is the case, Bohemian style or Boho chic(fashionable)/ Boho fashion is going to be right up your alley.

What’s Boho style?

This is a style that became popular in the US back in the 60s and 70s. It fell out of fashion for a while, but has been coming back strong in recent years among the younger generations.

It wasn’t as popular when I was in highschool myself, but I noticed it more and more as my younger sister was in school a few years later. It’s light and comfortable and definitely fits the summer vibe for us as we enter the hotter months of the year and perfect for a trip to the beach.

It’s based on gypsies and their trend of wearing everything they own as they travel. So, layering is a major staple of this style.

You don’t need all of your clothes to match with the Boho chic look. Your goal is to look and be comfortable. Loose fitted dresses and oversized shirts are standard.

Denim shorts and jackets fit well with light loose fitting first. Now, if you do want to show off your rocking silhouette then reach for a sash or belt to wrap around your waist and give some form to those beautiful dresses.

You can also pair your loose fitted tops with a more fitted fringed vest or denim jacket to make it more to your style.

Outside of the main clothing choices another big part of the Boho chic style is the accessories. Rock out with some necklaces, bracelets, rings. The key for making it fit the boho chic image is avoiding major brands.
In the US they use the term ‘junk jewelry’ meaning things you’d find at local craft shops and beach stalls. Large or chunky necklaces are great statement pieces to make your style pop. As with any style there is an ideology behind it and for bohemians that idea is sustainability.

Find your style

All the jewelry and clothing you buy should preferably be from local artisans or made of natural materials. If you’re not into the philosophy behind the style that’s totally fine, and feel free to wear whatever clothes you think are awesome, but if you are trying to dive head first into the Bohemian style and way of thinking make sure you go as natural as you can.

Getting clothes with natural fibers like bamboo, linen, cotton, and hemp will make your clothing choices more environmentally friendly and generally more comfortable as these tend to feel better in my personal opinion(I love 100% cotton clothing).

Let’s talk about footwear and large accessories next. I’m from California where the weather is always nice, so most of the Boho style I came across was sandals, open toed or gladiator style, but you can also go for suede or leather ankle boots and  clogs as well.
As for bags, go for those oversized fringed leather bags, maybe a cross body design or even a messenger bag. Belts are incredibly important to this style as most of the clothing is loose fitting so make sure it’s something you love. Leather belts are great as well as knitted or macrame and bead belts which were really common in my area.

Now where can you find all of these different pieces? Most boho chic stylistas will spend their shopping time in flea markets or second hand shops.

Conclusion

As I mentioned, sustainability is a key factor in this style so reusing vintage clothes is a great way to save some money as well as help the environment. But, where you find it is all up to you in the end.

You can make this style your fashion statement or fully embrace the mentality behind it. Either way, you’re going to look great and feel good about what you’re wearing. So, are you a Bohemian or are you still looking for your style?
